Kayaking on the Salt River

We rose at the lovely hour of 4:00 am to get ready to go kayaking on Sunday. We have only taken the kayak out on the water once since moving here and it was a disaster. A woman I volunteer with put together a trip down the salt river for Sunday. We jumped on the chance to get the boat out.

We picked Misty up and we were off to do some kayaking. We were told we would see a lot of wildlife on this trip so I was super excited.

Since most people in the group did not have kayaks, Claudia (the Liberty volunteer) used a river guide to rent boats. His name was Ted and he was a douche.

He yelled a lot while we prepared to get the boats on the river, which made for good mocking the whole way down the river. Finally sometime after 7:30 am we were ready to hit the river. One by one we pushed off. We didn't have to paddle much since the current carried us most of the way. There were a few baby rapids which we totally rocked through.

It was cooler on the water so it didn't seem that the day was that hot. That changed by the end when the river got calm and slow and we had to paddle to move anywhere.

It was a beautiful trip down the river, very lush and lots of birds. We saw tons of great blue herons, egrets, red winged blackbirds. We also saw roadrunners and an adult bald eagle and a juvenile bald eagle. Very awesome. We also saw wild reservation horses eating by the water. Now who can say they see that everyday?

We finished up around 11 am. We were baked from the sun, butts sore from sitting, and starving.

After we had some lunch and jumped in the pool, we took a wonderful afternoon nap. What an awesome day. We will be going again this summer with Claudia. The next time she promises no Ted and more rapids.

Facts about Sophie:
-She has a boyfriend who visits in the morning and in the evening, his name is Roger.
-She has a friend Amy who hangs with her most of the day.
-In the evening when all the birds fly off she gets restless and tries to fly too, especially when Roger leaves.
-Shes adorable.
